Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the buildup of extra fat in liver cells that is not caused by alcohol. It is one of the most common liver disorders worldwide, and especially in the western world. It can occur in both males as well as females and in every age group.

Other than alcohol, most common causes of fatty liver includes metabolic factors such as Obesity, Diabetes mellitus, Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia, Hypothyroidism and Increased Homocysteine level.

Who is at maximum risk for the development of metabolic syndrome ?

  • Abdominal obesity : Waist circumference > 40 inches in men and > 35 inches in women
  • Triglyceride level > 150 mg/dl 
  • HDL cholesterol < 40 mg/dl in men and < 50 mg/dl in women 
  • Blood pressure > 130/85 mm Hg 
  • Fasting glucose > 110 mg/dl 

 What should be the diet for patients suffering from fatty liver disease ? 

  • Fruits : Banana, Avocado, Citrus fruits (lemon), Papaya, Strawberry, Kiwi fruit
  • Vegetables : Cauliflower, Cabbage, Broccoli, Capsicum, Onion, Garlic
  • High Fiber diet : Legumes, Whole grains and Beans like Barley, Oats, Bajra, Moong, Sprouts 
  • Omega-3 fatty acids : Seafoods like Fish (Salmon/ Tuna), Flax seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Avocado, Walnuts, Olive oil
  • Antioxidants : Coffee, Green Tea, Garlic, Fruits (such as berries) and foods with high Vit E content (such as Almonds, Sunflower seeds, Spinach)

What are the foods to be avoided ?

  • Sugars : Fructose, Honey, Jaggery, Corn Syrup
  • Added Sugars : Candy, Ice cream, Sweetened beverages such as soda, Packaged fruit juices
  • Alcohol : All types including Whisky, Vodka, Breezer, Wine 
  • Refined Carbohydrates : White bread, Pasta, White rice
  • Fried Foods : French Fries, Chips, Doughnuts, Chicken wings
  • Salt (low intake -  should be between 1-2 gms per day only)
  • Saturated fats : Red meat like Beef, Pork and Butter, Cheese, Yogurt
Does Exercise helps ?
It is recommended to do at least 30-45 minutes of exercise five times a week. Some types of Yoga asanas might also help in losing weight and relieving mental stress.
